Project Title: Hierarchical intelligent control of grid distributed systems for generating and using electrical energy.
Project Acronym: INTELSIS
Project Executive Summary: The project deals with grid connected distributed low-power systems for generating and using electrical energy from renewable resources (wind and solar). These systems are designed to supply electrical power to local consumers, when an energy storage system (batteries) and a connection to the grid are considered. It aims an appropriate transfer of the excess/deficit of the local power production or consumption. The research area proposed in the project refers to designing of a genuine structure for an energy conversion system, mainly regarding the proposed solutions for power electronics and the control system, when the primary power resources (solar radiance and especially wind speed) are non stationary random variables, and when the local load is also random variable. The considered performance criterion for the automatic control system is a mixed criterion which aims, firstly, the cost of the supplied electrical power, and secondly, the requirements for battery life time. Supplementary, the grid connection requirements have to be fulfilled. The upper-level of the hierarchical control structure will use advanced control methods, including artificial intelligence techniques. The main objective is to design, make preliminary tests through simulations and finally, the physical realization and experimental evaluation of a low power (<5 kW) distributed system for electricity generation and use. This system will allow the mentioned performance criterion minimization.
